18th Century French Louis XV Pewter Lavabo Fountain with Walnut Stand
$3,150
About
This exquisite antique Louis XV lavabo fountain was crafted in Lyon, France, circa 1780, and represents a rare and highly refined example of 18th century French domestic furniture. Designed as an elegant handwashing fountain, the lavabo retains its original sculpted pewter reservoir and shaped basin below, reflecting the sophisticated hygiene practices of the period. The fluted and scalloped pewter tank is mounted against an intricately carved walnut back panel, richly ornamented with acanthus leaves, scrolling volutes, and a bold central shell motif emblematic of the Rococo aesthetic. Below, the matching walnut stand features a deeply scalloped apron carved with shell and floral motifs, supported by slender cabriole legs terminating in hoof feet, lending the piece exceptional grace and movement. The walnut surface displays a warm, well-developed patina, while the pewter elements show natural oxidation and surface variation consistent with age, all highlighting the quality of craftsmanship associated with Lyonnaise decorative arts. Originally intended for handwashing in refined dining rooms or private chambers, this authentic antique lavabo now offers striking decorative presence and could also be creatively repurposed as a distinctive planter or statement piece in an entryway or breakfast room. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 22”W x 18.75”D x 69.5”H
