This large, antique earthenware olive oil jar was created in Biot, Provence, Southern France, circa 1760. Made of blond clay and neutral in color, the terracotta vase has a traditional round bulbous shape. The rustic, time-worn pot features a pale ochre glaze around the rolled rim neck, and a natural beige tone throughout the body. Overall, this tall Provincial ceramic vessel is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich, aged and weathered patinated finish. In the south of France and especially in Biot (small village on the French Riviera), these olive pots are also known as the “king of jars,” and were used to transport olive oil in the 17th and 18th century. Measures: 25″ diameter 35″ height.
