19th C. French Poplar, Metal and Brass-Bound Travel Trunk Stamped B.B. Paris
$2,400
About
Crafted in France circa 1895, this striking late 19th-century travel trunk is built from richly patinated poplar and features bold black iron strapping, brass hardware, and corner guards. The lockplate is stamped B.B. Paris with the inscription Breveté S.G.D.G. Déposé, indicating that the trunk’s locking mechanism was a patented design registered in France under the “Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement” system—a common notation used for patent protection from the mid-19th century until 1968. Likely produced by a specialty Parisian workshop, the trunk exemplifies the era’s emphasis on durable, finely crafted luggage suited for grand voyages. The piece retains its original domed top with ribbed reinforcing battens, a center lock, and two side latches, all in well-aged brass. Side-mounted leather handles offer easy mobility, while the interior is lined with luxurious red floral damask, adding a layer of refinement and charm. Measuring 32” wide by 17” deep and 16” high, this antique trunk is both a functional storage piece and a decorative accent—perfect for use as a blanket chest, coffee table, or historical feature in any traditional or eclectic interior. A beautifully preserved example of Belle Époque travel culture with documented Parisian heritage.
