19th Century Black Forest Walnut & Leather Smoking Chair with Cigar Storage

About
Bring charm and conversation to your space with this unique “Chaise de Fumeur” or smoking chair. Crafted in France circa 1880, the antique chair is made of richly patinated walnut and upholstered in a rich tan leather secured with antique brass nailhead trim. The standout feature is the exceptionally detailed open-carved backrest, which presents a vivid rustic Black Forest style vignette: a huntsman takes aim with his rifle, his loyal dog poised at his side. A hunting bag and coiled horn hang from a pine tree laden with thick, textured branches, evoking the lush atmosphere of a woodland setting. The entire composition is dramatically framed with scrolling acanthus leaves, lending a sense of movement and artistry to the backrest that showcases remarkable hand-carved craftsmanship. Ingeniously designed for both comfort and function, the thick padded armrest conceals a hidden pull-out drawer on one side, originally intended to hold cigars, matches, or other gentleman’s smoking accessories. The drawer is seamlessly integrated into the padded top and flanked by a wooden pull for easy access. On the front edge of the armrest, two carved pipe rests are integrated into the wood, further emphasizing the chair’s original purpose as a gentleman’s smoking companion. Raised on turned and tapered legs with acanthus motifs at the knees, the chair is solid and beautifully balanced. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, this rare smoking chair is a functional curiosity, ideal for use as a conversation piece in a gentleman’s study, cigar room, or rustic lodge-style interior.
