About
A fascinating example of English royal sporting art, this antique hand-colored engraving depicts an impressive gathering of aristocratic riders on horseback in the picturesque grounds of Windsor Park. Originally created in England during the 19th century, the print is presented in a later wooden frame with black and gilt accents, surrounded by a deep green mat and protected under glass.
The detailed composition features a large procession of elegantly dressed gentlemen and ladies mounted on horses of various colors, riding along a wooded country path. The figures wear traditional equestrian attire, including tall black hats, tailored riding coats, and flowing garments. The surrounding landscape is beautifully rendered with mature trees, rolling meadows, and deer grazing in the distance, capturing the peaceful grandeur of the English countryside.
Titled “The Royal Cottage in Windsor Park,” the engraving is based on an original painting by Richard Barrett Davis (1782–1854), a celebrated English animal and sporting painter who served as Animal Painter to King George IV, William IV, and Queen Victoria. Known for his accomplished depictions of horses, hunting scenes, and royal sporting activities, Davis was closely associated with the British royal household.
Beneath the composition, the original inscription features the royal coat of arms and a dedication to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria, adding historical significance to the work. A label on the reverse identifies the engraving as hand-colored in watercolor and based on an original painting by R. B. Davis. The engraving itself is attributed on the label to F. Bromley.
The large decorative artwork is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining soft, attractive colors and fine details. The later frame and green mat complement the traditional English sporting subject. A wonderful addition to a library, study, country estate, ranch, or hunting lodge.
