19th Century French Barbotine Wall Pocket with Bird Motif and Oak Leaves
$875
About
Decorate a kitchen, garden room, or covered patio wall with this charming antique French barbotine wall pocket. Crafted in France circa 1890, the Majolica ceramic cachepot is modeled as a rustic woven basket nestled within an oak branch framework and surrounded by richly sculpted oak leaves and acorns. A blackbird perched along the rim adds movement and character to the naturalistic composition, a popular decorative theme in French ceramic production of the late 19th Century.
The hand-painted piece features a vibrant palette of deep greens, warm browns, creamy ivory tones, and a glossy turquoise interior glaze. The relief decoration is finely detailed, from the textured bark and foliage to the carefully modeled feathers of the bird. Designed to hang on the wall, the pocket could be used to display small flowers, dried botanicals, or simply as a decorative accent.
This antique French barbotine wall pocket is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with rich color saturation and a beautifully preserved glazed surface. The reverse bears impressed maker’s initials “J.R.L.”
