19th Century French Elm Dough Bowl with Hand-Carved Handle
$875
About
This authentic antique French dough bowl was hand-carved from a single solid block of elm circa 1880 and reflects the enduring craftsmanship of traditional provincial kitchens. Elm was widely favored for utilitarian vessels because of its strength and resistance to splitting, making it ideal for repeated use in bread making and food preparation. The bowl features a classic elongated oval form with generous depth and thick sculpted walls, originally designed for mixing and kneading dough. Flat integral handles are carved at each end, allowing the vessel to be easily lifted when full. The interior and exterior retain visible adze and gouge marks from the original hand-carving, giving the piece a wonderful rustic texture and authentic handmade character. Over time the wood has developed a rich, warm patina with darker tonal variations from years of use. Natural shrinkage lines, scattered wormholes, and small age separations are present, all consistent with its antique character and contributing to its honest primitive appeal. Today this antique dough bowl works beautifully as a decorative centerpiece on a farmhouse table, kitchen island, or console. It can be used to display fruit, bread, dried botanicals, or seasonal arrangements, bringing timeless French country warmth to rustic, primitive, or wabi-sabi interiors. In excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 30.25″W x 15.75″D x 6.5″H
