19th C. French Gothic Wrought Iron Double-Sided Music Stand with Fleur-de-Lis
$1,800
About
Featuring intricate scrollwork and traditional Gothic detailing, this antique double-sided music stand is a fine example of 19th-century French iron craftsmanship. Crafted in France circa 1880, the tall lectern, or lutrin in French, is constructed of hand-forged iron and stands on a sturdy tripod base with three gracefully curved legs terminating in flattened feet.
The slender central stem is embellished with decorative collars and turned details, rising to support a double-sided book holder designed to accommodate sheet music, a Bible, or other large books. Each side features an openwork arrangement of scrolling volutes and symmetrical wrought iron motifs, framed within a trapezoidal structure with a slanted reading surface. A decorative fleur-de-lis finial crowns the center, adding a distinctive French Gothic element.
The two-sided design allows the stand to be used from either direction, a practical feature traditionally associated with church lecterns and choir stands. Constructed in two sections, the substantial iron structure combines functional design with the ornamental character of French ecclesiastical furnishings.
The antique music stand is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a rich black patinated finish with subtle gilt accents that highlight the handcrafted details. Standing over five feet tall, this sculptural Gothic lectern would be equally appropriate in a library, music room, or traditional interior.
