About
Add spiritual charm and ecclesiastical elegance to your interior with this antique prayer kneeler, or “Prie-Dieu”. Crafted in France circa 1880, the piece is built from richly grained walnut and designed in the Gothic Revival style, featuring a slanted lift-top surface for storing devotional materials. The front apron is adorned with incised tracery, lending architectural depth and historical character.
The sides are flanked by deeply hand-carved figures of kneeling angels in prayer, their serene expressions and feathered wings rendered with remarkable craftsmanship. These angelic figures rest on scrolling acanthus supports above a base panel carved with stylized floral medallions. At the back, pierced lancet-shaped slats evoke the soaring arches of cathedral windows, reinforcing the Gothic aesthetic.
The seat is upholstered in its original rust-hued velvet—plush, well-preserved, and inviting. Raised on petite bun feet, the kneeler is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, showing only minor signs of wear consistent with its devotional history.
Ideal for a chapel, oratory, or as a decorative accent in a study or hallway, this antique prie-dieu offers both reverent presence and sculptural elegance.
