19th Century French Louis Philippe Burled Mahogany Commode with Marble Top
$4,950
About
Crafted in France circa 1850, this elegant Louis Philippe commode features a refined architectural silhouette and the rich natural beauty of burled mahogany. The rectangular case is veneered with superb book-matched burl panels across the drawer fronts, creating dramatic swirling grain patterns and warm amber tones that contrast beautifully with the darker framing elements and molded edges. The chest is topped with its original dark marble slab, likely Noir de Belgique, distinguished by soft white veining and a gently molded edge. The stone surface provides both durability and visual weight, complementing the warmth of the wood below. The façade is organized with a narrow frieze drawer above four full-width drawers, each fitted with turned wooden knobs and original diamond-shaped escutcheons. Rounded front corners and simple molded trim reflect the restrained elegance characteristic of the Louis Philippe period. The case rests on classic block feet, giving the commode a grounded, balanced presence. The drawers retain their original hand-cut dovetail joinery and slide smoothly, revealing the solid craftsmanship typical of quality mid-19th century French cabinetry. The wood has developed a beautiful, warm patina over time. Excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 50.75″W x 22.25″D x 38.25″H
