Standing nearly five feet tall, this antique mirror displays the graceful curves and elaborate ornament associated with the Louis XV style. Crafted in Paris, France circa 1870, the vertically oriented mirror features an arched, serpentine crest centered by a boldly carved cartouche composed of shell, acanthus leaf, and scrolling foliate motifs.

Carved leafy branches extend across the upper corners, flowing into the shaped sides of the substantial giltwood frame. Delicate floral engraving enriches the surrounding molding, while a continuous beaded border outlines the original mirror plate. The lower corners are finished with raised acanthus leaf carvings that balance the exuberant crest and reinforce the frame’s elegant symmetry.

The mirror retains its original mercury glass, showing the subtle variations and softly aged reflections characteristic of 19th-century craftsmanship. The original wood backing remains intact, and a later hanging wire has been added for installation. The frame preserves its rich gold leaf finish, now beautifully mellowed with age and accented by areas of warm patina that emphasize the depth of the carving.

The antique French mirror is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with minor wear consistent with its history.
