19th Century French Louis XV Carved Giltwood Mirror with Grape and Vine Crest
$3,200
About
This elegant antique wall mirror was crafted in France circa 1870 and displays the graceful curves and exuberant ornament associated with the Louis XV style. The tall giltwood frame is crowned by an elaborate pierced crest centered with a suspended cluster of grapes, surrounded by scrolling rocaille forms, twisting vines, and finely carved leaves. Additional grape clusters and vine tendrils trail across the upper corners, creating a particularly decorative and sculptural silhouette.
The molded frame is enriched with carved foliate details at the lower corners and retains a beautifully aged gilt finish with warm variations and gentle wear that enhance its antique character. The original mercury glass plate remains in place and shows the attractive foxing and subtle mottling expected from a 19th-century mirror. The reverse retains its original wood backing, and a later hanging wire has been added for installation.
The grape and vine imagery, traditionally associated with abundance and hospitality, makes this mirror especially appealing for a dining room, wine room, or bar, while its refined proportions also suit an entry, powder room, or living space. The mirror is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
