19th Century French Green Marble and Bronze Rooster Inkwell Signed Melotte

About
Decorate a desk, library, or study with this elegant antique bronze and marble inkwell set. Crafted in France circa 1880, the writing accessory is mounted on a richly veined green marble base with rounded corners and a recessed pen tray across the front. Centered on the platform is a finely detailed bronze rooster sculpture standing proudly atop a naturalistic mound base. The expressive bird displays exceptional featherwork and movement throughout the tail and wings, and is signed “Melotte” near the base.
The sculptural rooster is flanked by two gilt bronze ink containers fitted with their original porcelain liners and hinged lids. Each lid is decorated with acanthus leaf motifs and topped with a turned finial, adding refinement and symmetry to the composition. Raised on four small turned bronze feet, the inkwell combines practical function with the decorative elegance associated with late 19th century French desk accessories.
The antique writing piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich patinated bronze finish contrasted by the deep green marble with dramatic natural veining. A sophisticated decorative object for a study, office, or bibliothèque.
