19th Century French Napoleon III Mahogany Child’s Commode Chair
$1,400
About
A fascinating example of nineteenth-century children’s furniture, this antique chair combines refined Napoleon III styling with several ingenious practical features. Crafted in France circa 1870, the mahogany chair was designed to function as both a child’s high chair and a discreet commode chair.
The tall back, seat, side panels, and armrests are upholstered in richly patinated brown leather finished with decorative braided trim. A curved wooden safety rail extends across the front and is secured by its original locking mechanism, while an upholstered footrest provides additional comfort. The seat incorporates a circular potty opening positioned above an enclosed lower compartment, which can be accessed through a small hinged door at the back.
Elegant carved details include scrolling arm supports and unusual cluster-form feet fitted with caster wheels, allowing the chair to be moved easily. The shaped back and warm mahogany grain lend the utilitarian design a surprisingly sophisticated appearance.
Both functional and highly decorative, this rare child’s chair would make a distinctive addition to a nursery, library, or collection of historic children’s furniture. It is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a rich mahogany patina and beautifully aged leather upholstery.
