19th Century French Provençal Glazed Terracotta Serving Bowl
$425
About
Full of rustic character and warm southern French color, this antique Provençal bowl is a wonderful example of traditional utilitarian pottery. Crafted in Provence circa 1880, the shallow round bowl is made of terracotta and finished with a rich brown glaze on the exterior and rim, contrasting with a soft yellow glazed interior.
The interior shows attractive variations in tone, with darker brown glaze drips descending irregularly from the rim and a fine craquelure throughout the yellow surface, giving the piece an appealing time-worn appearance. The gently rounded sides rise to a thick molded lip, while the broad shallow form would originally have made the bowl practical for serving or food preparation.
The underside retains areas of exposed terracotta along with remnants of the original glaze and impressed markings from its manufacture. Today, the bowl would make a charming decorative accent on a farm table, kitchen island, or sideboard and could also be used to display fruit or seasonal objects.
The antique bowl is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected surface wear, glaze variations, and minor imperfections consistent with 19th-century Provençal pottery.
