19th Century French Quimper Faience Virgin Mary and St. Anne Figures, Set of Six
$1,600
About
Add charm, devotion, and collectible Breton artistry to a shelf or devotional grouping with this lot of six antique French faience figures, crafted in Quimper, Brittany, circa 1890. The set includes three representations of the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus and three figures of St. Anne, each modeled in a different size and hand-painted in the traditional Quimper palette of cobalt blue, yellow, green, and iron red. The smallest Virgin Mary figure is signed Henriot Quimper on the interior, while the largest St. Anne is marked Henriot Quimper France 70 beneath the base; the smallest St. Anne carries a handwritten Henriot Quimper France signature on the back. The remaining examples are unsigned but executed firmly within the same 19th-century Henriot workshop tradition. Quimper faience, produced in Brittany since the late 1600s, became renowned for its expressive folk imagery, regional costumes, and richly applied glazes. The Henriot atelier, one of the most important Quimper manufacturers—created devotional figures like these with distinctive elongated forms, stylized faces, and dotted robe decoration, hallmarks that make antique examples especially collectible today. This grouping remains in good condition commensurate with age and use, with light glaze irregularities typical of hand-painted antique faience. Together, the six figures create a colorful, harmonious tableau and an excellent addition to any Quimper or religious-art collection.
