19th Century French Silvered Bronze Catholic Ostensoir Monstrance with Sunburst
$2,900
About
This important antique French Catholic ostensoir monstrance was crafted in France circa 1850 and exemplifies the refined ecclesiastical metalwork of the mid-19th century. Executed in silvered bronze, the piece features an elaborate radiating sunburst centered by a circular glazed aperture, traditionally intended for the display of the consecrated host or a sacred relic. The halo is crowned with a Latin cross and enriched with finely modeled cherubic heads and scrolling decoration, symbolizing divine presence and protection. Below, a stylized sheaf-of-wheat motif emerges from the base of the sunburst, referencing the Eucharist, and transitions into a tall, faceted stem decorated with engraved floral and foliate motifs. The substantial stepped base rests on four claw feet and is richly ornamented with engraved sacred symbolism and classical borders, providing both visual weight and excellent stability. The surface retains a beautifully aged silvered patina with soft wear and tonal variation consistent with age, enhancing its authentic antique character. Both devotional and sculptural, this antique French monstrance is ideal for a religious collection, chapel display, or as a striking decorative accent in a curated interior. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 8.5″W x 4.5″D x 23.5″H
