Finely cast and richly detailed, this antique surtout de table was designed as an elegant centerpiece for a formal dining table. Crafted in France circa 1870 during the Napoleon III period, the oval plateau is made of silvered bronze and measures nearly two feet in length.

The pierced gallery presents a continuous Bacchanalian procession of playful cherubs among grapevines, foliage, rams, and other classical figures. Delicate floral and ribbon motifs embellish the lower border, while small feet elevate the plateau slightly above the table. The original mirrored surface reflects candles, flowers, crystal, and decorative objects placed upon it, enhancing their light and visual impact. The underside retains its original parquet wood backing.

A surtout de table is a decorative plateau traditionally positioned at the center of a formal dining table. Such pieces were used to display candelabra, flowers, serving vessels, or condiments and became important elements of European table decoration during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The centerpiece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a richly patinated silvered finish. The original mercury mirror has areas of silvering loss, adding authentic antique character.
