19th Century French Silvered Bronze & Mirrored Two-Piece “Surtout de Table”
$3,950
About
Decorate a dining table with this elegant antique French surtout de table crafted circa 1860. Made of finely cast silvered bronze, the oval centerpiece is composed of two fixed sections designed to be displayed together as one unified form. The surtout rests on fluted square feet and is encircled by a pierced frieze gallery with repeating X-form balustrade motifs, accented by classical mounts and foliate detailing at the central join. The original mirrored plateaus remain intact, reflecting candlelight and floral arrangements beautifully, and are set over the original wooden bottoms. The silvered bronze surface retains a rich, time-softened patina consistent with age and use, reinforcing the refined presence and authentic antique character of the piece. Traditionally, a surtout de table served as the focal point of a formal dining table, supporting candelabra, decorative objects, and seasonal arrangements while enhancing light and symmetry. By the 19th century, no formal table was considered complete without one, and today these centerpieces remain highly sought after for both traditional and transitional interiors. This antique surtout de table is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and displays beautifully as a functional and decorative centerpiece. Dimensions: 28.5″W x 20.25″D x 3″H
