19th Century French Silvered Repoussé Jewelry Casket with Figural Scenes
$1,600
About
This richly decorated antique jewelry casket combines elaborate relief work with an unusually theatrical series of narrative scenes. Crafted in France circa 1870, the rectangular box is constructed in silvered metal and raised on small bun feet above a molded base embellished with repeating acanthus leaf motifs.
Each side is worked in high relief with detailed figural compositions. The front depicts a lively domestic interior gathered around a table beside a fireplace, while the reverse features an animated outdoor celebration with musicians and dancers. The end panels show rustic pastoral scenes, including figures with animals and agricultural imagery. The hinged lid is equally elaborate, centered by an energetic bullfighting or arena scene surrounded by spectators, giving the piece exceptional visual interest from every angle.
Opening the hinged top reveals a deep interior lined in rich burgundy fabric, with padded tufted upholstery beneath the lid and at the base, making the casket suitable for jewelry, keepsakes, or other treasured objects. A keyhole is incorporated into the front beneath the molded rim.
The antique casket is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a beautifully aged silvered patina that accentuates the depth and detail of the repoussé decoration.
