Composed as a fausse paire, these two antique oil paintings present complementary views of the French countryside, with one arranged horizontally and the other vertically. Crafted in France circa 1890, each canvas is housed in its original carved giltwood frame and signed “L. Dupuy” in the lower left corner, a recognized pseudonym used by Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941).

The pastoral compositions depict picturesque rural landscapes animated by rustic buildings, winding paths, trees, and distant figures. Galien-Laloue’s skillful treatment of perspective, diffused light, and softly hazy atmosphere gives both scenes a remarkable sense of depth and tranquility. Their naturalistic colors and lively, expressive brushwork reflect the Post-Impressionist character associated with his landscape paintings.

Galien-Laloue was a celebrated French painter known for his atmospheric views of Paris, marine subjects, and country landscapes. Working under several pseudonyms—including Louis Dupuy, E. Galiany, J. Lievin, and E. Kermanguy—he became an accomplished chronicler of French life during the Belle Époque. His works are represented in several French museum collections and the artist is listed in Benezit.
