19th Century Swiss Black Forest Carved Walnut Tilt-Top Table with Village Scene
$1,600
About
Crafted in Switzerland circa 1860, this exquisite Black Forest occasional table features a round, tilt-top surface set over a carved twist stem and a sculptural tripod base ending in scrolled legs. The shaped and scalloped top is adorned with beautiful illustrative marquetry, depicting a detailed Alpine village scene with figures in traditional dress gathered near a fountain collecting water, all framed within contrasting bands of inlay. The surrounding surface showcases richly grained burlwood with intricate decorative borders, highlighting the artisan’s skill and the era’s appreciation for naturalistic themes. Both functional and decorative, the tabletop tilts upright for display when not in use, allowing the artwork to serve as a focal point. The table retains a rich walnut patina and is in good condition commensurate with age and use. A striking accent in a hunting lodge, mountain retreat, or refined rustic interior, this table captures the spirit of 19th-century Swiss craftsmanship with enduring charm. Table top is slightly warped.
