About
Place this large, colorful antique stand at your front door or in your mudroom to collect umbrellas, canes or other accessories. Created in England, circa 1930, the dark green iron bucket with top and back handle is decorated with a shield bearing a striking chevron pattern of alternating red and white zigzags set against a black field. Nestled within the black sections are stylized floral emblems symbolizing beauty and renewal. Above the shield rests a medieval-style helmet in silver and gold, facing forward in full profile. The helmet is adorned with elaborate mantling in red and white, flowing in ornate scrolls on either side. Crowning the helmet is a golden and red coronet-like crest, surmounted by a bisected gold and orange plume. Flanking the shield are two heraldic supporters: on the left, a golden horse rearing with a bold red bridle, symbolizing strength, loyalty, and readiness; on the right, a gray lion with red claws and tongue, representing courage, vigilance, and nobility. Both animals are rendered in a stylized, expressive manner, gripping the shield with one fore paw. Below the shield, the motto “Each Shall Strive For The Welfare of All”, expressing a spirit of collective responsibility. It means that every individual should work not just for their own benefit, but for the good of the entire community; it emphasizes cooperation, selflessness, and public service. The colorful bucket is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns rich hand painted colors. Versatile, the coal or fire bucket could also be used to hold wood burning wood next to a fireplace.
