Early 20th Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut Chest of Drawers from Provence
$2,600
About
Circa 1920, this elegant antique walnut “sauteuse” chest was crafted in Provence and reflects the graceful lines associated with Louis XV–inspired provincial furniture. The facade features a gently serpentine front while the sides remain straight, creating a balanced silhouette supported by slender cabriole legs that terminate in small scroll feet. The chest is fitted with two drawers across the top and three drawers below, each framed with molded cartouches and decorated with delicate carved foliate motifs at the corners. Original brass bail pulls with rosette backplates provide a refined contrast to the warm walnut tones, while the central drawers retain their original escutcheons and working key. The molded top follows the serpentine movement of the front and displays beautiful walnut grain enhanced by a warm and rich patina developed over time. Traditional drawer construction and the paneled back further attest to the craftsmanship typical of early 20th century provincial cabinetry. This antique French commode offers practical storage while maintaining an elegant scale. It works beautifully as a small chest in a bedroom, entry, or living space, and could also be used as a nightstand bedside table. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
