Early 20th Century French Louis XV Walnut and Wrought Iron Hall Tree
$2,400
About
Bring elegant French craftsmanship and sculptural presence to an entryway, dressing room, or office with this handsome antique hall tree. Crafted in France circa 1930, the freestanding coat and hat stand is constructed of solid walnut and wrought iron in the Louis XV taste.
The tall central standard is richly shaped with a succession of turned baluster, urn-form, and fluted elements, creating an architectural silhouette from base to finial. Rectangular panels carved with scrolling foliate motifs punctuate the shaft, while the beautifully polished walnut displays warm color, attractive grain, and a rich, mellow patina.
The upper section is fitted with an elaborate arrangement of hand-forged wrought iron hooks. Twisted iron stems unfurl into open scrolls, loops, and smaller curled terminals, providing ample hanging space for coats, hats, scarves, handbags, or umbrellas. Their airy, symmetrical composition forms a decorative crown around the turned walnut finial, while the dark iron provides a handsome contrast to the warm wood.
The substantial tripod base is raised on three boldly carved cabriole legs embellished with acanthus leaves, rocaille scrollwork, and rounded whorl feet. A carved pendant finial beneath the center completes the balanced Louis XV-inspired design and emphasizes the quality of the craftsmanship.
Both practical and decorative, this tall coat rack would make an impressive addition to a foyer, mudroom, bedroom, dressing area, boutique, or executive office. The antique hall tree is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich walnut patina with beautifully aged wrought iron throughout.
