About
Bring a touch of maritime heritage to your interior with this impressive early 20th-century ship’s wheel. Crafted in Scotland circa 1910, the wheel was made by Mactaggart Scott & Co., the distinguished Edinburgh engineering firm celebrated for its precision marine and naval equipment. Expertly constructed from richly grained English oak, the piece features eight hand-turned spokes joined by a double-rimmed frame and reinforced with a polished brass band. At the center, a solid brass hub is finely engraved “Mactaggart Scott & Co LTD – EDINBURGH.” Founded in 1898, Mactaggart Scott & Co. became one of Britain’s foremost suppliers of ship steering gear, deck machinery, and hydraulic systems for the Royal Navy and shipyards worldwide. By the early 20th century, the company’s name was synonymous with craftsmanship and reliability, a reputation that continues today through its advanced naval engineering systems produced near Edinburgh. This authentic wheel likely served aboard a working vessel during the Edwardian period, and now displays a beautiful, timeworn character with a rich patinated walnut finish and intact brass fittings. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, it makes a striking statement piece when mounted on a wall or stand in a study, library, or coastal-inspired interior. Measures: 36.5″ diameter x 4.25″D
