19th Century French Pewter Lion Inkwell Signed A. Bossu
$1,300
About
Add a distinguished touch of antique French character to a desk, library, or study with this elegant pewter inkwell signed A. Bossu, crafted in France circa 1880. Rich in sculptural detail, the writing accessory features a proud lion standing atop a raised rocky outcrop, symbolizing strength, authority, and wisdom.
The elongated base is beautifully modeled in the Rococo taste with flowing scrollwork, shell motifs, and asymmetrical curves, all resting on four scrolled feet. Flanking the central sculpture are two covered ink reservoirs with hinged lids, richly decorated with foliage and ornamental detailing. The finely cast lion displays exceptional modeling throughout, from its expressive face and powerful stance to the deeply textured mane and muscular anatomy.
Signed by A. Bossu on the reverse, this antique inkwell combines artistic craftsmanship with practical function and serves as a striking decorative object even when not in use. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and retains a rich pewter patina that highlights the depth and quality of the casting.
