Late 19th Century Grolier Society Leather-Bound Holy Bible, Set of 14
$2,800
About
A complete 14-volume edition of The Holy Bible, this finely bound antique set was published in London by The Grolier Society. Crafted circa 1895, the edition contains the Old and New Testaments together with the Apocrypha and presents the text in an elegant format intended as much for the library as for serious reading. Each volume is bound in dark green boards with richly patinated brown leather spines and corners. The raised spine bands are accented with gilt lettering, ruled geometric panels, and individual volume titles, creating a particularly handsome and cohesive appearance when the books are displayed together. The leather has developed warm tonal variation and gentle wear that gives the set considerable character. The interiors are illustrated with numerous full-page biblical images, many still retaining their original printed tissue guards. The title page identifies The Grolier Society of London and bears the distinctive red Lucerna Pedibus device. The opening volume begins with Genesis and Exodus, while Volume XIV concludes with the later books of the New Testament and Revelation. Complete multi-volume Bible sets of this scale are especially appealing for use in a library, study, bookcase, or collector’s interior, where the uniform bindings create a strong architectural presence. The complete 14-volume antique set is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with expected rubbing and surface wear to the leather bindings and occasional light foxing and age toning to the pages. Dimensions: 6.5″ W x 9.75″ H (each)
