Mid-19th Century French Faience Armorial Platter in Rouen Taste
$2,600
About
Crafted in France circa 1850, this antique faience platter is decorated in the celebrated Rouen style, featuring a richly detailed polychrome composition with scrolling lambrequins, floral sprays, and delicate insect motifs across the surface. The shaped oval form is framed by an ornate border in vibrant cobalt blue, iron red, and ochre tones, creating a lively and balanced presentation. At the center, a crowned heraldic shield with fleur-de-lis and animal motifs adds a refined armorial element, giving the piece a stately and decorative presence.
Hand-painted on a tin-glazed earthenware body, the platter displays a beautifully aged craquelure throughout, enhancing its authentic character and depth. The underside bears hand-painted initials “MC,” likely denoting the decorator or workshop, a common practice among regional French faience makers of the period. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use consistent with its 19th century origin.
With its generous scale and elegant silhouette, this platter makes a striking display piece for a wall, buffet, or dining table, and pairs beautifully with other French faience or country decorative elements.
