Mid-Century Indian Marble Elephant with Pietra Dura Floral Inlay
$1,300
About
This finely carved elephant sculpture was produced in northern India during the mid-20th century and reflects the continuation of Mughal-inspired marble carving and pietra dura inlay traditions. Executed in solid white marble, the figure is crisply modeled with a raised trunk, expressive facial features, and well-defined legs, demonstrating skilled hand carving and confident sculptural form. The body is richly decorated with intricate hardstone floral inlay in shades of cobalt blue, turquoise, green, ochre, and terracotta. Scrolling botanical motifs embellish the saddle cloth, head, and legs, drawing directly from classical Indian decorative vocabulary long associated with marble inlay work from the Agra and Jaipur regions. The polished marble surface provides an elegant contrast to the colorful inlay, enhancing the clarity and visual depth of the design. Symbolic of strength, wisdom, and good fortune, the elephant serves as both a decorative sculpture and a culturally resonant object. Minor surface wear and light marks are consistent with age and handling and contribute to its authentic character. This antique marble sculpture is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use. Dimensions: 12.5″W x 6.5″D x 13″H.
