About
Decorate a study, living room or den with this beautiful pair of antique French paintings. Painted in France circa 1890, each artwork is executed in oil on board and presented in its original carved gilt wood frame. The compositions illustrate picturesque rural cottages along quiet waterways, rendered with soft atmospheric light and delicate brushwork. One painting is signed L. Dupuy in the lower left and the other in the lower right, a documented pseudonym used by the celebrated French artist Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941). The colorful pastoral scenes are in excellent condition, showing the artist’s refined sense of space, gentle illumination and subtly hazy ambiance. Their intimate scale and post-Impressionist character make them ideal accents for a study, living room, office or reading nook. We thank Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this pair, each work appearing in his archives of Galien-Laloue. Galien-Laloue, born to French-Italian parents, achieved wide acclaim for his landscapes and especially his Belle Époque Parisian street scenes. His paintings capture early 20th-century urban life with carriages, omnibuses and pedestrians, making his work prized both artistically and historically. He is represented in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Louviers, La Rochelle and Mulhouse. Throughout his career he worked under numerous pseudonyms due to gallery contracts, including J. Lievin, E. Galiany, L. Dupuy, as well as Juliany, A. Languinais, E. Kermanguy, A. Michel, H. Lambert, E. Lefevre, Dubois and Dumoutier. He is well listed in the Benezit Dictionary of Artists. Dimensions: 15.5″ W x 13″ H each.
