Pair Mid-Century Floral Still Life Oil Painting Pendants by John W. Orth
$2,800
About
Painted in America circa 1950, this elegant pair of vintage floral still life paintings is the work of artist John W. Orth (1889–1976). Each oil on canvas depicts an abundant arrangement of garden flowers presented in a rounded vase against a softly modeled neutral background.
The two compositions were conceived as pendants, sharing a harmonious palette while remaining individually distinctive. One arrangement features lilies, chrysanthemums, delicate blue and white blossoms, and soft pink flowers gathered in a cream-colored vessel, with foliage and cut blooms extending across the tabletop. Its companion centers on a silvery gray vase overflowing with lush pink roses, white chrysanthemums, blue blossoms, and cascading greenery. Orth’s careful modeling, subtle highlights, and restrained backgrounds give the flowers both luminosity and depth.
Each canvas is signed “J.W. Orth,” one in the lower left and the other in the lower right. Born in Bavaria in 1889, John W. Orth studied art in Germany before continuing his training at the Académie Julian in Paris. He later immigrated to the United States, where he became known for portraits, still lifes, and other finely rendered compositions. Orth died in Santa Ana, California, in 1976. Biographical material about the artist accompanies the pair.
The paintings are presented in complementary carved giltwood frames embellished with foliate ornament and fitted with pale gray fabric liners, which beautifully complement the muted backgrounds and pastel coloration of the works.
The pair is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
