Pair of 19th Century French Louis XVI Walnut Fauteuils with Eagle Crest
$2,325
About
Elevate a formal interior with this striking pair of antique French Louis XVI style armchairs, crafted circa 1880 and distinguished by their bold neoclassical carving and architectural presence.
Each fauteuil is built in solid walnut and raised on fluted, tapering legs, joined by a shaped apron carved with rosettes and floral motifs. The uprights and arm supports are richly detailed with acanthus carving and beaded edges, leading to padded armrests that enhance both comfort and scale. The square backs are crowned with an exceptional hand-carved crest featuring an eagle with outstretched wings, framed by laurel garlands, a powerful symbol drawn from classical antiquity and Empire influence.
The chairs retain their original upholstery, a yellow silk woven with delicate neoclassical urn and laurel wreath motifs, echoing the carved ornamentation of the frames. While the fabric shows visible wear and presents beautifully as-is for a layered, collected look, reupholstery would further elevate the pair for a more formal setting.
The walnut frames are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, showcasing a warm, rich patina and crisp carving throughout. Generously scaled and visually impactful, these antique fauteuils work beautifully in a living room, study, or flanking a fireplace.
