Pair of 19th Century French Marine Oil Paintings in Giltwood Frames, Dated 1878
$2,400
About
This charming pair of 19th-century French marine oil paintings was executed on panel circa 1870. Each small-scale composition (11.5″ W x 10″ H including frame) captures coastal life with remarkable detail: fishermen at work, beached vessels, and sailboats dotting calm waters beneath clouded skies or a glowing sunset. The works are signed lower right, likely by the same hand, though the signature appears partially illegible. Both paintings are housed in ornate giltwood frames with bold relief carving in the Rococo Revival style. The richly molded frames feature deep leaf motifs and beaded borders, enhancing the jewel-box quality of the compositions. The reverse shows old pine construction and later hanging hardware, consistent with 19th-century French panel mounting. The artworks retain excellent character with craquelure and patina appropriate to age. A rare antique pair, ideal for collectors of marine art or for bringing a touch of 19th-century French charm to a library, study, or intimate wall space. Excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
