Vintage Handwoven Wicker Motorcycle Sculpture Attributed to Tom Dixon
$7,800
About
This striking vintage wicker motorcycle sculpture is an exceptional example of late 20th-century sculptural design, handwoven from natural wicker and rattan over a shaped wooden framework. The piece was purchased in France and is believed to date from circa 1980, a period associated with experimental, material-driven design and large-scale display works. Rendered at an impressive near life-scale, the sculpture is clearly inspired by the iconic proportions and stance of a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, with its wide front profile, substantial wheels, low-slung silhouette, and muscular presence. The form captures the spirit of a classic heavyweight cruiser while translating it into a highly sculptural, woven medium. Details such as the oversized wheels, articulated fenders, fuel tank, saddle seat, side saddlebags, handlebars, headlight, and front fork are all thoughtfully interpreted through confident basketry techniques. The dense, expertly executed weaving demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship, with deliberate variations in weave density and structure that create texture, movement, and visual depth. The surface displays a warm, naturally aged patina with light wear consistent with age and use, enhancing the authenticity and character of the piece. Open weave areas allow light and shadow to play across the form, making it visually engaging from every angle. At the time of acquisition, the sculpture was represented as having been made by Tom Dixon during his early experimental period. Wicker and rattan motorcycle sculptures closely associated with Dixon’s formative years are documented as having been produced as window display and exhibition pieces, notably for Habitat in the UK, and comparable examples have appeared on the international design market. While this example is not signed and is accompanied by oral rather than documentary provenance, its materials, scale, construction, and sculptural language are consistent with those attributed works. Designed as a decorative art object rather than functional furniture, this sculpture is a bold and unforgettable statement piece. It would look spectacular in any Harley-Davidson showroom or custom motorcycle shop, as well as in a gallery setting, design-forward retail environment, collector’s interior, or industrial-inspired space seeking an iconic and conversation-starting object. The piece is in excellent vintage condition, structurally sound and stable, with minor wear typical of aged wicker. Dimensions: 69″ L x 28″ W x 41″ H
