19th Century Italian Louis XV Style Giltwood Painted Rococo Wall Mirror
$2,975
About
Richly decorative and full of character, this antique Italian wall mirror was crafted circa 1880 in the Louis XV taste. The tall carved giltwood frame features a dramatic pierced Rococo crest of scrolling acanthus leaves and floral motifs, surrounding a painted central cartouche.
The most distinctive feature is the series of hand-painted pastoral vignettes that continue across the crest, side rails, and lower frame. Executed in soft tones of green, ochre, rose, and blue, the scenes depict travelers, figures, animals, and countryside settings, giving the mirror a charming narrative quality rarely found on pieces of this type.
The shaped mirror plate is framed by scrolling carved moldings, while the lower apron continues the fluid Rococo silhouette with additional gilt foliate carving. The surface retains a beautifully aged painted and gilt finish with natural patina, and the mirror plate shows light foxing consistent with age.
With its impressive five-foot height, the mirror has strong decorative presence and would be especially effective in an entryway, powder room, bedroom, or above a console.
Excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
