19th Century French Provencal Terracotta Olive Oil Jar from Biot
$3,400
About
This large antique olive oil jar was crafted in Biot, Provence, circa 1780. Made from blond clay and shaped in the traditional rounded form characteristic of the region, the vessel features a wide, bulbous body and rolled rim neck. A soft ochre glaze coats the upper portion, contrasting beautifully with the natural beige tone of the unglazed body. The surface showcases a richly aged and weathered patina, developed over centuries of exposure and use. Subtle variations in texture and color highlight the authenticity of this Provincial earthenware piece, while its generous scale adds sculptural presence. Known as the “king of jars” in Southern France, Biot olive jars like this were essential for transporting and storing olive oil throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. In excellent condition commensurate with age and use, this antique jar offers timeless rustic character and makes a stunning focal point in both interior and exterior spaces. Measures: 22″ diameter 27″ height.
