18th Century French Louis XV Carved Walnut Banquette with Aubusson Tapestry
$9,900
About
Refined and richly detailed, this 18th century French banquette is a superb example of Louis XV design blended with classical storytelling. Crafted circa 1770, the frame is made of hand-carved walnut, shaped with a gently scalloped apron and resting on elegant cabriole legs. The wood displays a deep, warm patina, enhancing the sculptural floral carvings along the apron and knees. The upholstered seat features an exceptional Aubusson tapestry, woven in harmonious shades of blue, ochre, and cream. The scene portrays L’Enlèvement d’Europe (The Abduction of Europa), drawn from classical mythology and inspired by the 1643 painting by Flemish master Jacob Jordaens. The narrative depicts Zeus disguised as a bull, carrying Europa across the sea in a moment of dramatic grace and divine symbolism, representing beauty, desire, and transformation. Trimmed with period nailheads and showing only minor wear consistent with age, this antique banquette is in excellent condition. A rare fusion of French Rococo elegance and mythological art, it offers timeless sophistication whether placed in a salon, entryway, or at the foot of a grand bed. Dimensions: 60″ W x 25″ D x 24″ H
