19th C. French Louis XVI Giltwood Wall Mirror with Laurel and Ribbon Crest
$6,600
About
This elegant antique giltwood mirror was crafted in Paris, France circa 1870 in the Louis XVI style, celebrated for its neoclassical ornamentation and architectural symmetry. The crest features a finely carved laurel wreath tied with ribbon, symbolizing triumph and virtue, with crossed fasces subtly integrated beneath, an emblem of classical unity and strength. Standing 5.5 feet tall (66 inches high by 41 inches wide), the frame is richly carved with beaded trim, ribbon-twist borders, and corner rosettes, all finished in a soft matte water-gilt surface. The original mercury glass plate shows light speckling and silvering loss consistent with age, enhancing its antique character. The mirror retains its original wood back and hanging hardware, with a faint inscription on the reverse reading “Paris”, a subtle but elegant affirmation of its French origin. A grand 19th-century mirror of remarkable scale and timeless refinement. Excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a warm, well-preserved patina throughout.
