Pair of Mid-Century French Majolica Lidded Pastry or Cheese Domes with Trays
$1,600
About
This rare matching pair of two-piece Majolica-style pastry or cheese domes was crafted in France circa 1960. Each barbotine ceramic set includes a circular platter with a ribbed edge finished in a rich, deep brown glaze, paired with a domed lid adorned in vibrant raised relief. The tops feature blossoming white flowers and green leaves set against a soft turquoise ground, while the lower sections are encircled with a realistic faux basket-weave motif. Twisted double-branch handles crown each dome, adding sculptural charm and functionality. Each easuring 14.25 inches high by 10.75 inches in diameter, these mid-century servers were designed for presenting cheese, pastries, or desserts, and today serve equally well as whimsical statement pieces in a kitchen or dining room. The fresh palette and richly textured surfaces bring character and warmth to farmhouse, cottage, or French provincial settings. In excellent vintage condition with light wear consistent with age. Both are marked on the underside, offering a delightful blend of French mid-century charm and functional artistry.
