19th C. French Gothic Oak Hall Stand Bench Heraldic Crest and Linen Fold Panels
$4,500
About
Crafted in France circa 1880, this impressive Gothic Revival hall stand is carved from solid oak and richly adorned with architectural and symbolic detailing. The high back features deeply carved linen fold panels, an iconic medieval motif, framing a central cartouche with a vibrant polychrome heraldic crest. The crest displays a crowned shield with a red bend flanked by three fleurs-de-lis, referencing French nobility or ecclesiastical patronage. Flanking the crest are scrolling foliate carvings in high relief, lending both depth and movement to the façade. The upper section is punctuated by a carved frieze and a series of brass coat hooks beneath a molded cornice, while the integrated bench opens for storage, making it as practical as it is decorative. The arms and plinth base are accented with additional linen fold carvings and classical volutes, reinforcing the piece’s medieval inspiration. Standing 81 inches high by 56 inches wide and 19.5 inches deep, this antique hall bench makes a commanding statement in an entryway or foyer, combining utility with Old World grandeur. Excellent condition with a rich walnut-toned patina, original hardware, and wear consistent with age.
