19th Century Spanish Renaissance Carved Chestnut Folding Bench with Iron
$4,200
About
This handsome antique folding bench was crafted in Spain circa 1880 and reflects the bold architectural character of the Spanish Renaissance Revival. Built of solid chestnut, the bench features a long rectangular seat raised on four deeply carved scrolled supports, their rhythmic volute decoration giving the piece a particularly sculptural profile. The legs are joined by a striking arrangement of hand-forged iron stretchers, including curved cross braces that provide both stability and visual contrast against the warm wood.
The hinged backrest folds completely forward over the seat, allowing the bench to convert into a lower-profile form when desired. When raised, the back reveals an exceptionally detailed carved panel filled with scrolling acanthus, foliate motifs, and stylized ornament centered by an oval medallion bearing an interlaced monogram. Decorative wrought-iron strap hinges extend down onto the seat, reinforcing the substantial construction while adding authentic period character. Carved leaf borders along the seat and back further enrich the design.
The antique Spanish bench is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a softly bleached patinated finish that highlights the chestnut grain and depth of the hand carving. An unusual and highly decorative piece for an entry hall, gallery, mudroom, or covered loggia.
