19th C. Farmyard Scene with Chickens Painting Signed Cornelius Van Leemputten
$1,900
About
Crafted in Belgium circa 1890, this charming oil-on-panel painting captures a lively barnyard scene with a rooster and hens pecking near a stone wall and haystack, framed by a glimpse of the countryside. The work is signed lower left by Cornelius (Corneille) Van Leemputten (1841–1902), one of Belgium’s most celebrated painters of rural life. Born in Werchter and largely self-taught, Van Leemputten became known for his detailed and atmospheric portrayals of farm animals, particularly poultry and sheep, set against serene pastoral backdrops. His naturalistic style was influenced by the French painter Charles Jacque and the Belgian master Eugène Verboeckhoven, but with a softer, more intimate realism that captured the quiet dignity of peasant life. Throughout his career, Van Leemputten exhibited widely across Europe, receiving numerous awards, including gold medals in Ghent (1883) and Berlin (1896), and was named a Knight of the Order of Leopold in 1895. His works remain sought after by collectors and can be found in museums and fine collections throughout Belgium and abroad. This example displays his characteristic fine brushwork, balanced composition, and warm palette. Presented in a new richly carved giltwood frame, the painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with strong color and detail throughout. Dimensions: 24.5″ W x 16.5″ H
