19th Century French Landscape Oil Painting Signed L. Dupuy for Galien-Laloue

This luminous antique oil painting captures the quiet beauty of the French countryside. Crafted in France circa 1890, the horizontal canvas depicts a peaceful river winding through a verdant landscape, framed by tall trees, flowering banks, and a cluster of cottages in the distance. Soft reflections shimmer across the water, while the muted sky and warm evening light lend the composition a wonderfully serene atmosphere.

The painting is signed “L. Dupuy” in the lower right corner, one of several pseudonyms used by celebrated French artist Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941). His expressive brushwork and skillful handling of light are evident throughout the scene, particularly in the foliage, reflective water, and softly rendered buildings. The canvas is presented in an ornate carved giltwood frame with a wide linen liner and beaded gilt inner border.

Eugène Galien-Laloue was renowned for his atmospheric landscapes, marine subjects, and animated views of Belle Époque Paris. Because of exclusive gallery agreements, he worked under several pseudonyms, including L. Dupuy, J. Liévin, and E. Galiany. His works are represented in several French museum collections and are listed in Bénézit.

The painting and frame are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
