19th Century Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible with Brass Clasps
$1,500
About
Preserve a piece of devotional history with this exquisite antique edition of Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible, published circa 1880 and richly decorated in the Gothic Revival style. Bound in deeply embossed black leather and framed with ornate brass guards, the volume features two beautifully engraved brass clasps and gilt edges that have mellowed to a warm patina. The elaborate front medallion bears the verse “Thy Word is a Lamp unto My Feet and a Light unto My Path,” surrounded by symbolic roundels and architectural tracery. Inside, the title page attributes the work to Rev. John Brown, D.D., whose celebrated Self-Interpreting Bible includes marginal references, paraphrases of obscure passages, explanatory notes, and evangelical reflections. The interior contains finely printed scripture, genealogical sections, and vivid hand-colored illustrations. Solid, substantial, and intended as a cherished family heirloom, this Bible remains in excellent condition commensurate with age and use and displays beautifully on a library table, writing desk, or devotional altar. Measures: 10.5″ W x 3.5″ D x 13.25″ H.
