19th Century French Porquier-Beau Quimper Faience Moon-Shaped Vase
$975
About
Elevate a shelf, console, or cabinet with this charming antique Quimper faience vase, crafted in Brittany circa 1895 during the celebrated Porquier-Beau era. Moon-shaped in profile and fitted with two sculpted lizard-form handles, the piece is richly hand-painted on one side with a tender Breton folk scene titled L’Histoire de la Grand-mère, depicting a grandmother spinning wool as three children gather around her. The reverse features flowering branches rendered in soft pinks, greens, and yellows, framed by deep cobalt foliate borders characteristic of Porquier-Beau’s finest work. The underside bears the inscription L’Histoire de la Grand-mère, Quimper along with the Porquier-Beau mark. Quimper faience has been produced in Brittany since 1778 and is prized worldwide for its hand-painted Breton figures and regional narratives. The Porquier-Beau partnership (active ca. 1875–1904) represents the artistic pinnacle of Quimper production, admired for its superior modeling, luminous glazes, and exceptional painterly detail. Works from this period, especially narrative pieces with sculptural elements, are among the most sought-after by collectors. Dimensions: 14″ W x 4″ D x 10.5″H
