19th C. French Louis XV Provençal Painted Walnut Duchesse Brisée Chaise Longue
$4,600
About
This elegant antique French Louis XV Provençal Duchesse Brisée was crafted in Provence circa 1880 and is composed of three separate elements: two bergère armchairs and a central connecting stool. When aligned, the pieces form a graceful chaise longue, while each element may also function independently. Traditionally, this configuration allowed a gentleman and lady to recline opposite one another, the central section serving as an extended support between the two seats. The design reflects both the social customs and refined comfort of 19th century French salon life. The frames are carved from walnut and display a warm and rich off white patinated painted finish developed beautifully over time. The silhouette is fluid and sculptural, with gently arched backs, scrolling arms, molded rails, and delicate foliate carving. Cabriole legs terminate in subtle scroll feet, and the shaped aprons echo the movement characteristic of the Louis XV aesthetic. The carving remains refined and balanced, allowing the walnut to remain the focal point. The antique ensemble is upholstered in a romantic floral fabric featuring bouquets of roses and trailing ribbons on a soft neutral ground. Nailhead trim follows the contours of the frames, adding definition and structure. The underside reveals traditional 19th century construction consistent with fine French craftsmanship. This circa 1880 Duchesse Brisée offers sculptural elegance and versatility, ideal for a bedroom, salon, or dressing room. Some small staining on fabric. See detailed images.
