19th Century French Spelter Figural Lamp “Coup de Soleil” Signed Ferrand
$1,200
About
Add a sculptural and poetic accent to your interior with this elegant antique figural lamp. Crafted in France circa 1870, the piece features a finely cast spelter sculpture of a young maiden in motion, her windswept drapery and expressive pose evoking the lightness and spontaneity of the Belle Époque taste. The figure is mounted as a lamp, gracefully interacting with the structure, giving the composition both movement and purpose. The sculpture retains a beautiful verdigris patina over the spelter, enhancing the depth of the modeling and lending a rich, time-softened surface. The figure stands on a molded base set over a decorative metal plinth and shaped black base, with a warm-toned marble spacer adding contrast and refinement. The lamp is further accented with a small titled plaque reading “Coup de Soleil par Ferrand” and signed Ferrand in the casting. This work is after a model by Ferrand, a listed French sculptor active in the late 19th century, known for genre figures and allegorical subjects produced in bronze and spelter for the decorative arts market. His works often depict graceful female forms in animated poses, aligning with the popular tastes of the period and the rise of accessible sculptural lighting. Pieces bearing his name were frequently edited by Parisian foundries and remain collectible today for their charm and decorative appeal. The lamp has been fitted for electricity and includes the shade shown. It is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a desirable patinated surface and light wear consistent with its history. Dimensions of lamp only: 8″ Diameter x 28.5″H Shade 15.5″ x 15.5
