19th Century French Avallon Faience Rouen Style Pierced Centerpiece Tray
$975
About
Decorate a table, console or buffet with this elegant antique faience tray crafted in Avallon, Burgundy circa 1880. Of elongated oval form, the piece features a richly contoured silhouette with a scalloped and pierced border, creating a lively and dimensional profile.
The tray is beautifully hand-painted in the traditional Rouen palette of cobalt blue, iron red, soft green and yellow over a white ground. The decoration showcases intricate scrolling motifs, lattice reserves and finely detailed floral bouquets at the center, arranged in a balanced and symmetrical composition inspired by 18th century Rouen designs.
The openwork rim and shaped handles add movement and refinement, while the form rests on four small feet, giving the piece the presence of a sophisticated centerpiece or vide-poche. The underside bears a hand-painted “Avallon” mark along with a model number, indicative of production in Burgundy where faience workshops continued to reinterpret historic French ceramic traditions through the 19th century.
This antique tray is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with light wear to the underside consistent with handling. A decorative and versatile piece, perfect for both display and practical use.
