19th Century French Louis XV Carved Giltwood Canapé de Lit Crest
$2,200
About
Decorate a bedroom or wall with this elegant antique French carved giltwood canapé de lit, crafted circa 1870. Originally designed as a bed canopy crest, the long, gently arched form would have been mounted above a bed to support or frame draped fabric, adding both height and theatricality to the interior.
The shaped façade features a refined Louis XV–inspired silhouette centered with a sculpted cartouche, flanked by scrolling acanthus leaves and delicate floral motifs. The hand-carved ornamentation displays fluid movement and asymmetry typical of the Rococo revival, while the molded edges create a soft, continuous contour across the length of the piece.
The surface retains a warm gilt patina with areas of natural wear that reveal the underlying bole, adding depth and authenticity. The reverse shows original construction details and mounting points, consistent with its intended architectural use.
This antique canopy crest is in good condition commensurate with age and use, with minor losses and wear appropriate to its age and function. A versatile decorative element, it can be repurposed above a bed, mirror, doorway, or tapestry to bring a refined French accent to any interior.
